Circular mil is based on circular area: a conductor with diameter d mil has d² circular mils.

One circular mil equals pi/4 square mil, so circular mil and square mil are not the same physical area.

Equivalent solid diameter is not stranded cable outside diameter and does not include insulation or jacket.

This geometry calculator does not calculate resistance, current density, ampacity, voltage drop, NEC compliance, IEC compliance, or thermal limits.

Engineering Notes

  • Circular mils are convenient for round conductors because diameter in mils squared directly gives circular mil area.
  • A circular mil is a real physical area, but it is not equal to one square mil.
  • The calculator keeps physical area, circular mil area, and square mil area separate to avoid dimensional confusion.
  • kcmil is the preferred modern display label; MCM is treated as equivalent only as a naming convention.
  • Area, circular mil, kcmil, and AWG inputs produce an equivalent solid circular conductor diameter.
  • Equivalent solid diameter is useful for geometry comparison but should not be used as cable outside diameter.
  • Stranded conductors include packing effects, strand lay, air gaps, insulation, and jacket dimensions not modeled here.
  • AWG geometry is loaded from the shared AWG reference dataset and not recalculated from rounded display values.
  • Conductor material does not affect area, diameter, circular mils, or kcmil.
  • Current, temperature rise, ampacity, code compliance, and voltage drop are intentionally outside this geometry calculator.
  • Use Wire Resistance Calculator when length and resistivity matter.
  • Use Current Density Calculator when current and cross-sectional area must be combined.

Common Mistakes

  • Using square mils when the formula requires circular mils.
  • Forgetting the pi/4 factor when converting circular mils to physical area.
  • Confusing radius with diameter in A = pi d² / 4.
  • Treating diameter and cross-sectional area as interchangeable.
  • Confusing mil with millimeter.
  • Using cmil and kcmil without the 1000 factor.
  • Creating a duplicate AWG table instead of using the shared dataset.
  • Parsing 00, 000, or 0000 AWG as ordinary positive integers.
  • Treating equivalent solid diameter as stranded cable outside diameter.
  • Including insulation diameter in conductive area calculations.
  • Adding material or current assumptions to a pure geometry problem.
  • Using this calculator as an ampacity or electrical-code sizing tool.

FAQ

What is a circular mil?

A circular mil is the area of a circle with a diameter of 1 mil, where 1 mil equals 0.001 inch.

How do I calculate circular mils from wire diameter?

Convert diameter to mils, then square it: A(cmil) = d(mil)^2.

Is one circular mil the same as one square mil?

No. One circular mil equals pi/4 square mil, about 0.785398 square mil.

Why is there a pi divided by 4 factor?

Physical circle area is A = pi d^2/4. Circular mil notation hides that factor by defining circular area from diameter in mils squared.

How many mm² are in one circular mil?

One circular mil is pi/4 times 0.0254² mm², which is about 0.000506707479 mm².

How many circular mils are in 1 mm²?

One square millimeter is about 1973.525 circular mils.

What is kcmil?

kcmil means thousand circular mils. 1 kcmil equals 1000 circular mils.

Is MCM the same as kcmil?

In wire sizing, MCM is an older naming convention that is treated as equivalent to kcmil: 1 MCM = 1 kcmil = 1000 circular mils.

How do I convert kcmil to circular mils?

Multiply kcmil by 1000.

How do I convert circular mils to kcmil?

Divide circular mils by 1000.

How do I convert diameter to area?

For a solid round conductor, use A = pi d^2/4 with diameter and area in consistent units.

How do I convert area to equivalent diameter?

Use d = sqrt(4A/pi). This is the equivalent solid circular conductor diameter.

What does equivalent solid diameter mean?

It is the diameter of a solid round conductor with the same conductive area. It is not necessarily the measured outside diameter of a stranded cable.

Does this calculator include insulation?

No. It only calculates bare conductive geometry and does not include insulation, jacket, or cable outside diameter.

Can I use this for stranded wire outside diameter?

Use caution. The equivalent solid diameter is based on conductive area and does not include strand packing, air gaps, insulation, or jacket diameter.

Does conductor material affect circular mils?

No. Circular mils are geometry only. Copper, aluminum, and other materials with the same geometry have the same circular mil area.

Does current affect circular mils?

No. Current does not change conductor geometry. Current density and ampacity are separate calculations.

Does this calculator determine ampacity?

No. It does not determine safe current, NEC compliance, IEC compliance, derating, or thermal installation limits.

Does this calculator calculate resistance?

No. Use the Wire Resistance Calculator for resistance because resistance requires material resistivity and length.

Does this calculator calculate current density?

No. Use the Current Density Calculator for J = I/A calculations.

Does AWG mode reuse the shared AWG data?

Yes. AWG mode uses the existing shared AWG dataset rather than duplicating an internal AWG table.

How are 00, 000, and 0000 AWG handled?

They are handled by the existing AWG aliases in the shared dataset, mapping to 2/0, 3/0, and 4/0.

What is the circular mil area of a 10 mil diameter wire?

A 10 mil diameter wire has 10² = 100 circular mils.

What is the diameter of 10000 circular mils?

The equivalent diameter is sqrt(10000) = 100 mil, which is 0.1 inch or 2.54 mm.

Why do circular mils scale with diameter squared?

Area is proportional to diameter squared, so doubling diameter produces four times the circular mil area.

Can I use this for metric wire sizes?

Yes. Enter physical conductor area in mm² or diameter in mm, and the calculator reports circular mils and kcmil.
